Advanced Metering
Infrastructure Service and Maintenance

The Coast Guard has installed advanced wireless utility sub-metering systems at sites nation-wide, with additional meters being added each year. Meters are installed on electrical, gas, and water systems, encompassing over 2,100 buildings and housing units, and over 200 cutter shore ties. An estimated 3,000+ meters have been installed supporting the metering of several Modbus devices for each Data Acquisition Server (DAS). The DAS is manufactured by Obvius (www.obvius.com), a wholly owned subsidiary of Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc., who specializes in hardware solutions for gathering energy information. At each Coast Guard site, the wireless metering devices transmit utility consumption data to a central unit, the DAS; see Enclosure 1. The DAS then uploads the data to a USCG approved data management system- currently the internet-based data management system provided by Vitality IO.
